I Am Not A Painter
A book about the identities we inherit, the ones we build, and what it costs to confuse the two, written for anyone who's performed a version of themselves so well they forgot which parts were real.
We all inherit a first identity, assigned by family, culture, and circumstance before we're old enough to choose it. Few of us ever stop to ask whether it was ours to begin with.
I Am Not A Painter follows that question through boardrooms and quiet rooms at home, using my years of building secure systems as a lens for a human problem: how do you tell who you are from who you learned to be?
I spent years securing other people's systems before I noticed I'd never audited my own.
I wrote this during a season when the frameworks I'd used for years to secure organizations, threat models, honest audits, turned out to describe my own life uncomfortably well. The title comes from realizing a role I'd worn for years, and worn well, was never actually who I was.
This book asks three questions. Living with them changes things.
What did you inherit?
Naming the identity you were handed, clearly enough to choose what to keep.
What have you been performing?
The difference between competence and identity, and why confusing them exhausts people.
What are you building instead?
A practical way to rebuild an identity you don't have to perform.
What people are saying.
"I read this expecting a leadership book. I got a mirror. Uncomfortable in the best way."
"Charles writes about identity the way he talks about security, clearly, honestly, with no interest in making you feel comfortable."
Read the whole thing.

Anyone who has ever performed a version of themselves so well they forgot which parts were real, leaders, especially, but not only leaders.
Both. I write from my cybersecurity and leadership work, but the questions the book asks are personal, not professional.
